Clinisys to mine Big Data on COPD Indicators
Clinisys EMR Inc., an Edmonton based health informatics company involved in providing health data analytics solutions and cloud-based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, recently began a research project that will mine Big Data related to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The project is expected to provide new insights to health administrators and clinicians for opportunities to improve care, lower costs and save lives. COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. People with COPD are at an increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer, and a variety of other medical conditions. While COPD remains a major area of concern for the patient population and the health professionals treating them, tapping into early indicators of COPD or identification of patients likely to develop this chronic aliment, may allow health professionals to develop better treatment plans, improve disease management strategies, and may reduce the risk for the patients developing other associated conditions.
According to Statistics Canada Health Fact Sheet 2009 to 2011, “among Canadians aged 35 to 79 years, 4% reported having been diagnosed by a health professional with COPD, chronic bronchitis or emphysema.” COPD is a high-priority health issue for clinicians and health administrators.
The Clinisys COPD project is expected to enhance its existing research and capability in clinical data analytics. The project is supported by Clinisys R&D department and its partners. Clinisys has developed a state-of-the art data analytics engine designed specifically for analyzing large datasets in the healthcare sector; the engine is currently being used in analyzing demographic and costing indicators. The Clinisys analytics solution provides novel data-driven insights to clinicians, specialists and health administrators – by analyzing large medical datasets – generally obscured by sheer volume of data or other limitations associated in deciphering Big Data.
Clinisys intends to expand its horizon by adding a new clinical module to its existing solution which will allow the analysis of disease related datasets such as COPD to be effectively analyzed using the most modern Big Data Analytics tools and technology. “COPD is a growing area of interest identified in the 2010 Statistics Canada report,” said Mehadi Sayed, President and CEO of Clinisys. “We have been focusing our R&D efforts towards the strategic clinical areas that can benefit from utilizing new innovations in data science domain. Our research expansion into COPD will add value to our products and improve health outcomes,” he added.
The core project research team will be located in Edmonton. Besides its in-house scientists, Clinisys is also supported by various academic and healthcare institutions across Canada including Subject Matter Experts from diverse disciplines.
